These attacks, which began in earnest in May 2025, have exposed weaknesses in Nigeria’s “super camp” military strategy and highlighted the growing sophistication of insurgent tactics—including the use of surveillance drones and advanced mobility.
The violence has forced residents, only four years after resettling in Marte following previous displacement, to flee again, mainly to the already-crowded town of Dikwa.
This mass exodus has overwhelmed local resources and raised fears of increased vulnerability among displaced youth to militant recruitment, as warned by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.
The impact includes heightened insecurity, disrupted livelihoods, and mounting humanitarian needs, with over two million people displaced and thousands killed by the insurgency over the past 16 years.
