Nasarawa Assembly pledges to enact laws that will mitigate negative impact on climate change
…House Committee Chairman on Environment Hon. Omadefu bags Award of Climate Champion of the Year
Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has promised to enact laws that will mitigate the negative effects of climate change in Nasarawa State to tackle environmental and other challenges associated with climate change.
Chairman, House Committee on Environment and member representing Keana Constituency, Hon. Mohammed Adamu Omadefu stated this while playing host to members of African Activists for Climate Change Justice in his office in Lafia today Wednesday.
The Group led by its leader Dr. Michael David, who is the Executive Director, Global Initiative for Food Security and Eco-System Preservation GIFSEP presented the lawmaker, Hon. Omadefu with the award of Climate Champion of the Year for his commitment and zeal in championing climate and environmental activities in the State.
The lawmaker Hon. Omadefu appreciated and acknowledged the giant contributions and zeal of the organization in promoting activities that will help in addressing environmental and climate challenges.
He assured them of full support from the house through legislation that will complement what they are doing in the State.
Hon. Omadefu said the 7th State Assembly under the leadership of the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau is poised towards enacting laws that will better the lives of the people of the State.
” I want to appreciate you for the visit as this is very effective and apt, because what you are doing is helping my committee and by extension the house to function well on its environmental issues.
” We will partner positively to achieve the mandate on climate issues, you are dealing with the right person and the right committee, for the right job, because this house under the leadership of the Rt. Hon. Speaker, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau is committed towards passing bills and resolutions that will have impact on the citizens.
” I want to assure you that your documents will reach the Speaker and justice will be done to it,” Hon. Omadefu said.
Earlier, leader of the group Dr. Michael David said the group has been in the State for the last three years comprising of NGOs, the media, civil society, network of disability among others in championing climate change movement considering the fact that Nasarawa is a flood prone State.
He emphasized that the network is seeking to enhance partnership with the state assembly on advocacy and other programs that will mitigate environmental challenges and climate change.
” We seek to work together to promote and influence processes in the state to build a document frame work and policy on climate related issues,” he said
He commended Hon. Muhammed Adamu Omadefu for giving them audience as well as his commitment to see that issues relating to his committee on environment are always brought to the front bonner for prompt action.
