The Federal and Nasarawa State Governments have expressed their commitments to tackle erosion in the State and address other environmental challenges.
This was highlighted when the National Project Coordinator of NEWMAP-EIB, Dr. Andy Ayuba and his Nasarawa State counterpart Mr. Ismaila Muhammad alongside Hon. Mohammed Adamu Omadefu, Chairman, Nasarawa State House of Assembly Committee on Environment recently carried out assessment visit to Erosion Sites In Obi, Keana and Lafia LGAs of the State.
The National Project Coordinators of NEWMAP-EIB, Dr. Andy Ayuba said that the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP) is a World Bank-Assisted Project aimed at reducing the vulnerability of Nigeria’s population to soil erosion and associated land degradation.
” In Nasarawa State, the project is implemented in collaboration with the European Investment Bank (EIB)”
He said that the aim of the visit was to assess the level of damaged done by erosion with the view of tackle them due to erosion negative effects to human health and existence.
He said already they have visited some affected areas across some LGAs and assessed the level of damage caused assuring that necessary steps will be taking to address the situation.
On his part, Nasarawa State Project Coordinator of NEWMAP-EIB, Mr Muhammad Ismaila corroborated with the view of the National Coordinator of the project.
He said that the project was established in order to reduce soil erosion and associated land degradation.
“Promote sustainable environmental management practices, enhance community resilience to environmental hazards among others” he said.
He commended the Federal and Nasarawa State Governments for their efforts in controlling erosion in communities across the state.
On his part, Hon. Mohammed Adamu Omadefu, member representing Keana Constituency at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly and Chairman House Committee on Environment has appreciated the management of NEWMAP-EIB for the visit and assured of the assembly’s support to enable them succeed.
He said that the assembly is committed in supporting any project that would improve on the lives of the people of the state.
The Chairman, House Committee on Environment also assured them of the assembly synergy with NEWMAP-EIB in order to curtail erosion in the state which he said is threatening people’s existence.
