Experts predict Nigeria’s population will hit 450 million by 2050
Nigeria’s population is expected to reach 450 million by 2050 unless current fertility rates are reduced, according to experts.
Dr. Ejike Oji, Chairman of the Nigeria Family Planning Conference, observed that high fertility rates are a pressing concern in Nigeria, where the population expands by approximately four million individuals annually.
Dr. Oji pointed out that Nigeria’s fertility rate has dropped somewhat, from 5.3% to 4.8%, but more strides are necessary.
He cited countries such as India and China, which slowed population growth and invested in young people to foster economic development.
“We will be in serious trouble if we fail to reduce our fertility rate to 4%.”
Dr Martin Migombano from Family Planning 2030 (FP2030) also stressed the relationship between population growth and maternal health.

According to him, Nigeria accounts for 28.5% of global maternal deaths. He highlighted the significance of family planning access at the local level and advocated for cooperation between governments, donors, and religious leaders.
