Israel, the US voted against a UN resolution for a ceasefire in Gaza

On November 20, 2024, the United States cast the sole veto against a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, which received support from the other 14 members.

The U.S. justified its veto by stating that the resolution did not link the ceasefire to the release of hostages held by Hamas, which it deemed essential for any truce245.

This marks the fifth time the U.S has vetoed a ceasefire resolution since the conflict escalated over a year ago, highlighting ongoing tensions within the Security Council regarding the humanitarian crisis in Gaza367.

The resolution received support from all other 14 council members, emphasizing the need for both a ceasefire and the release of hostages held by Hamas.

U.S officials argued that the resolution’s unconditional nature overlooked the necessity of linking a ceasefire to hostage release, which they deemed critical for a sustainable resolution to the conflict

The United Nations General Assembly voted to demand an “immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire” between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the immediate release of all hostages, Reuters reports.

Russia supported the resolution, while the US and Israel voted against the ceasefire deal.
