Nasarawa Govt. to return displaced Bassa people to Toto LG as stakeholders advocate for tolerance and peace
The Executive Chairman of Toto Local Government Council, Pharm Ahmed Baba Yahaya, has appealed to the people of the area to promote peace and tolerance among themselves, irrespective of their affiliations, for the overall peace and development of the area.
Yahaya spoke while addressing stakeholders at an expanded peace and security meeting held at the council’s secretariat on Thursday, attended by traditional rulers, lawmakers, and other stakeholders.
According to reliable source, the meeting was scheduled to take place prior to the State Government’s proposed plan to enable the Bassa people, who have been displaced from the area for many years, to return home.
The Chairman stressed that peace is essential for the growth and development of any society, and as such, the people of the area must adopt it as a guiding principle.
He emphasized that peace is sacrosanct and we must all uphold it at all times for the area’s improvement.
The Toto LG Chairman informed stakeholders that the meeting’s objective was to conduct extensive consultations, raising awareness among the masses about the state government’s plan to return the displaced Bassa people, who have been away from their local government area for years
He commended Gov. Abdullahi Sule for his generous gesture in ensuring that lasting peace is restored to the area.
He urged the local citizens to support Governor Sule’s peace initiatives in the area and facilitate the return of the Bassa people.
Speaking further, HRH, the Ohimegye of Opanda Umaisha and President of Toto Local Government Traditional Council, Alhaji Usman Abdullahi, commended Engr A A Sule’s leadership style, especially in areas of peace and infrastructural development among others.
The Monarch promised the support of his people for the State Government initiative to uphold peace in the area.
In his words, “we are brothers and sisters and have coexisted for decades.”
“We need to embrace peace at all times., ” he added.
The meeting brought together stakeholders, including two House of Assembly members representing Toto Local Government in Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Hon. Mohammed Garba Isimbabi (APC-Toto/Gadabuke) and Hon. Ibrahim Abdullahi Sa’ad (PDP-Umaisha/Ugya), Deputy Chairman of the area, Hon. Atnadu Sunday, Speaker, Toto LG Legislative Council, Councillors, Traditional Rulers, Head of Security Operatives, leaders of Youth Organizations, among others, with contributions from some stakeholders on the emerging issue and sustenance of peace in the area.
