Nasarawa Speaker Calls on LG Legislators to Ensure Transparency, Accountability for effective Local Governance

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, has stressed the importance of local government lawmakers in the state scrutinizing their councils’ expenditures to ensure transparency, accountability, and effective governance at the local level.
This was disclosed in a statement signed and issued by Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Jibrin Gwamna, who noted this while hosting members of the Local Government Legislative Councils at the Assembly complex in Lafia, Nasarawa State Capital on Monday.
The delegation, under the auspices of the Forum of Speakers of LG Legislative Councils, comprised the Speakers of the 13 LGAs in the State, along with their Principal Officers.
Jatau admitted that discrepancies exist in local government expenditures and directed the legislative arms to thoroughly review expenditures, guaranteeing transparency, accountability, and good governance in the third tier of government.
The Speaker praised the federal and state governments for making local government autonomy a priority.
Speaker Jatau pointed out that development depends on effective synergy with local government chairmen, counseling them to prioritize this collaboration to foster peace, unity, and development throughout the State.
He assured them of the Assembly’s support in the area of workshops and trainings as newcomers to guide them in formulating effective by-laws.
Speaker Jatau, representing Kokona West, assured the Assembly of rigorous adherence to the local government law regarding autonomy in the State.

At an earlier juncture, Rt. Hon. Mohammed Shuaibu Madaki, Chairman, Nasarawa State Forum of Speakers of Local Government Legislative Councils, lauded the Assembly for enacting the local government law, anticipating that it would enhance transparency, accountability, and expedited development at the third tier of government.
The Chairman appealed to the State House of Assembly to constitute a committee to verify the real financial expenses and capacity of local governments in the State amidst financial autonomy.
