‘Jesus Christ is not God’ sparks reactions on social media
Arguments against Jesus Christ being God often cite His death on the cross, asserting that God cannot die, thus implying that Jesus, who died, is not divine. Additionally, some interpretations emphasize that Jesus is the Son of God but not “God the Son,” arguing that the concept of the Trinity evolved historically and was not part of early Christian doctrine.
These perspectives highlight a distinction between Jesus’ role and God’s nature, suggesting a monotheistic view where only the Father is the true God.
Reacting on the trending topic, the online community of internet users across social media platforms have commenced reacting to a banner about Jesus Christ displayed at the entrance of the Lekki Central Mosque in Lagos State, South West region of Nigeria
The banner’s inscription, which circulated widely on Wednesday, read: “Jesus Christ is not God. He is a Prophet and Messenger of God!”
The banner also quoted the Glorious Quran 5:72, stating, “ALLAH says, Those who say that God is the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, have disbelieved. The Messiah had said, ‘Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. God has forbidden Paradise to anyone who worships something else besides Him.'”
Reactions have followed the message, with some arguing that the motive behind it was blasphemous.
On the other hand, some have insisted that pastors have repeatedly validated the message.
Wumi Tuase, a Nigerian actress, shared her disappointment on X, noting, “I generally refrain from engaging in religious conversations, but I was taken aback by the presence of this display at the gate of Lekki Central Mosque.”
Fisayo Ojabodu tweeted, “You don’t see the banner is disrespectful to other people’s religion. And is propagating foolish agenda.” #Fisayo
One user, identified by the handle Adesuwa, observed that this action constitutes nothing short of blasphemy. #Adesuwa
FS Yusuf, another user, tweeted, “Christianity is actually a religion of peace. #FS
In the last twenty years, my family church has been targeted by Muslim extremists, who have set it on fire for unwarranted reasons, such as religious extremism and President Buhari’s defeat in the 2011 election.
“This is the grim reality for hundreds of churches and individuals falsely accused of blasphemy. We would not be having this conversation if this article were written by a Christian organisation. Tolerance is essential for progress in a pluralistic society like ours.”
One Silva Bella on X expressed the following sentiment: “The issue at hand is not whether Christianity is a peaceful religion or not … Jesus is not God. My thorough examination of the Bible has led me to this conclusion, although I continue to struggle with understanding why others refer to Jesus as God, given His status as the son, which necessarily means God is the father.”
“Jesus is God, Jesus is your King, and Jesus will pass judgment on all, for it is only through him who has walked in your flesh and felt your pain that judgment will be fair,” GeradTheGreat observed.
“We remain peaceful and always will be, because we trust that our God can defend Himself without our fighting, Joycccc wrote on Meta.
Another user on X, Expope stated, “The late Deborah, whom they set on fire, had not done anything as egregious as this before they collectively terminated her life.”
On X, another user identified as ChristTheLighhouse expressed, “We as Christians accept criticism, backlash, rejection, and even insults. Our Lord and saviour, whom we believe in and serve, received even more, up to the point of death! He prayed for unbelievers and his persecutors and killers.” #ChristTheLighhouse
“The gospel of repentance and conversion to Christianity, as well as the acceptance of Jesus as one’s personal Lord and Savior, is never achieved through force, war, coercion, or propaganda; rather, it is facilitated by the gentle acts of the Holy Spirit of God. This is the game changer. It is a personal experience. Consider the example of Saul, later known as Paul, of Tarsus.
Conversely, Muhammad Shaikhan noted, “The beauty of this drama between Christians and Muslims is that everyone of us recognizes that God is one. God is always a God. We cannot substitute God with anybody.”
The argument is all about the teaching of Jesus and that of Prophet Muhammad, Peace be upon them. So I don’t vex.”
Abdul’fattah Muhdl’awwal said, “Jesus himself never said he is God.
“You and the likes are the ones calling him God. Hence the quote in that banner is the fact and not blasphemous.”
One Olawale on Meta said, “The message on the banner is true.”
