Mahmoud Calls for Collaborative Cancer Combat
Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, stresses the imperative need for inclusive and sustained action to combat cancer, a significant public health challenge.
Her call to action is consistent with global recognition of the growing cancer burden, especially in low- and middle-income countries where access to prevention and treatment is limited.
The initiative’s urgency is compounded by the expected surge in cancer cases, driven by factors such as aging populations and unhealthy lifestyles.
Recent studies reveal that nearly 70% of cancer-related fatalities occur in these regions, underscoring the urgent need for effective public health strategies and interventions.
Dr. Mahmoud’s appeal stresses the significance of collaborative efforts among stakeholders in improving cancer care systems and enhancing patient outcomes.
In a statement issued by Austine Elemue, SA Media to the FCT Minister of State, on February 5, 2025, said the Minister made this call on the occasion of the 2025 World Cancer Day commemoration organised by the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) in Abuja.
Mahmoud emphasized that the present FCT Administration is prioritizing investments in both infrastructure development and healthcare system strengthening, ensuring that FCT residents have improved access to quality services, including cancer prevention and treatment.
Moreover, she stressed the importance of collaboration to guarantee that no resident of the FCT is left behind in the fight against cancer.
The Minister said, “Tackling cancer requires collective efforts. The FCT Administration is committed to forging strategic partnerships with institutions like NICRAT to enhance cancer awareness, build capacity for prevention and early detection, and improve access to screening and treatment services.”
She commended the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) for its tireless efforts in promoting cancer prevention, treatment, and research in Nigeria
According to her, “The commitment to driving awareness and fostering collaboration is truly commendable, and today’s event is yet another testament to your tireless efforts.”
Mahmoud reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment to collaborating closely with NICRAT and all stakeholders to implement effective interventions that enhance the health indices of residents and ultimately save lives.
Earlier, Prof. Usman Malami Aliyu, Director General of the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment, had earlier noted that World Cancer Day seeks to promote awareness, improve education, and catalyse joint efforts to prevent cancer, while supporting individuals affected by the disease.
While speaking on this year’s theme; “United by Unique,” the DG highlighted the importance of collaboration to create inclusive cancer solutions globally. Aliyu pointed out that, since its inception, NICRAT has initiated and sustained robust collaboration with local and international partners on training the cancer workforce at all levels of care, research, and contemporary preventive measures.
He, therefore, assured that the Institute would continue to work hard to ensure the actualisation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the health sector, especially in cancer care.
