Delta LGSC trains 100 staff on strategic agricultural development
The Delta State Local Government Service Commission (LGSC) has recently conducted a training program and reaffirmed its commitment to capacity building by training 100 staff members, including Agricultural Officers, Agricultural Superintendents, and Livestock Officers serving in the Unified Local Government Service. This training on strategic agricultural development aims to enhance the skills and knowledge of these officers to better support agricultural activities and food security initiatives within the state.
The training aligns with Delta State’s efforts to boost agriculture as a key sector for economic diversification and development.
This capacity-building initiative is part of the LGSC’s ongoing strategy to improve efficiency and productivity within the local government agricultural services, reflecting the state’s commitment to promoting agriculture among public servants and strengthening service delivery in this critical sector.
The training was highlighted in a recent update from August 2025, showing the state’s proactive approach to supporting agricultural officers through skill development.
The training seminar, organised in collaboration with Meritlink Consults, was flagged off by the Commission’s Chairman, Hon. (Dcn) Joseph Otirhue, represented by the Commission’s Second Member, Princess (Dame) Minnie Igbrude.
Otirhue said the Commission would continue to prioritise training and retraining of staff to enhance efficiency and service delivery. He noted that Nigeria is blessed with arable land, a favourable climate for diverse agricultural activities, and a vibrant population capable of harnessing these potentials.
According to him, agriculture remains a vital driver of national development, with vast opportunities for food production, income generation, and rural transformation.
However, he lamented that the sector particularly at the local level, has yet to reach its full potential due to inadequate investment, outdated farming methods, limited access to modern tools, and underutilisation of resources.
“To change this narrative, the Commission deemed it necessary to equip Agricultural Officers, Superintendents, and Livestock Officers with up-to-date knowledge, effective strategies, and practical tools to boost food production and livestock management,” he said.
Otirhue explained that the training would also empower officers to promote agribusiness, encourage rural entrepreneurship, strengthen value chains, and improve market access, initiatives that will ultimately boost the economic base of local government areas.
“As frontline officers, you are strategically positioned to drive innovation, enhance productivity, and promote sustainable agricultural practices in your communities,” he told participants.
The seminar, themed “Maximizing Economic Potentials in the Local Government Through Strategic Agricultural Development,” was held at the Oputa Hall, Ozoro, Delta State. It featured seasoned professionals who shared expertise aimed at enriching participants’ performance in their respective roles.
