Oborevwori to Launch Welfare Scheme for 10,000 Widows
The Delta State Widows Welfare Scheme, to be officially flagged off by Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori on Monday, August 18, 2025, aims to benefit 10,000 widows across the state’s 25 local government areas and 270 federal wards.
Each beneficiary widow will receive a monthly stipend of ₦15,000 along with access to free medical care.
This initiative, disclosed by the Executive Assistant to the Governor on Social Investment Programmes and State Coordinator of the Widows Welfare Scheme, Chief (Dr.) Isioma Okonta, is a commendable effort to support vulnerable and impoverished widows in the state.
The program is designed to alleviate financial burdens and improve the welfare of the widows, reflecting the government’s commitment to social justice and the well-being of all Deltans.
The registration for the scheme is ongoing and is non-political, encompassing all religious affiliations.
Community leaders, traditional rulers, and religious organizations are involved in ensuring a transparent and effective enrollment process.
This welfare scheme will be sustained throughout the Governor’s tenure, highlighting a lasting commitment to social welfare and inclusive governance.
This welfare scheme marks a significant and compassionate effort by the Delta State Government to support widows who face both financial and emotional challenges, thereby improving their living conditions and reinforcing public trust in the government’s social programs. The official flag-off event on August 18 will mark the beginning of this impactful initiative.
The ceremony, scheduled to hold at the Dome Event Centre, Asaba, will commence at 10:00 a.m.
According to Okonta, the programme is part of the Oborevwori administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of widows across the state, providing them with financial support and other empowerment packages to enhance their livelihoods.
He added that the initiative aligns with the state’s broader social investment agenda, aimed at cushioning economic hardship and fostering inclusive growth.
The event is expected to attract government officials, stakeholders in social welfare, and representatives of various women groups across Delta State.
