Nasarawa Police Thwart Mob Attack on Alleged Okada Snatchers

A tense situation unfolded at Zimbabwe Junction in Uke, Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, as two alleged motorcycle snatchers narrowly escaped death after being apprehended by a mob.

The timely intervention of officers from the Uke Divisional Police Headquarters in Karshi Development Area prevented a lynching.

According to eyewitnesses, the two suspects snatched a motorcycle at the GRA area in Uke, but the owner summoned courage and gave them a hot chase.

In a process to escape, the suspects abandoned the motorcycle and dived into the River Uke near the popular Zimbabwe Bridge along the Abuja-Keffi Express Road.

However, the mob followed them into the river, apprehended them, and beat them with sticks and stones.

It was gathered that Just as the mob was about to lynch the suspects, the police arrived following a call from community members and dispersed the mob, who were largely motorcyclists bitter over incessant snatching and killing of their members.

One of the motorcyclists, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said his brother was killed by motorcycle snatchers last week and expressed frustration with the police’s inability to curb the menace.

The motorcyclist lamented, “We can’t allow the police to keep preventing us from killing those who don’t want to work but snatch and kill us for performing legitimate service just to fend for our families.”

This sentiment highlights the growing frustration among motorcyclists in the area, who feel that the police are not doing enough to protect them from these crimes.

The Nasarawa State Police Command has been working to combat motorcycle snatching in the area. Recently, they arrested a suspect who slit a commercial motorcyclist’s throat and stole his motorcycle in Karu Local Government Area.

The command has also been collaborating with other security agencies to track down and apprehend motorcycle snatchers
