…Commends Hon. Sunday Asefon for Sustained Students Welfare Advocacy
The Technical Assistant on Communication in the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement and the National Coordinator Sdgs National Students Council, Ambassador Timothy Nwachukwu, has called on Nigerian students to fully embrace the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). The appeal comes amidst a concerning disparity in application rates from students across the Country’s geopolitical zones.
Amb. Nwachukwu in a Statement, commended the Senior Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Students Engagement, Hon. Sunday Asefon, for his sustained advocacy for students’ welfare across the Country, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts to improve educational opportunities for all Nigerian students. He expressed deep appreciation for Asefon’s dedication and urged other stakeholders to follow suit.
He however highlighted a significant imbalance in the number of applications received from different regions since the inception of NELFUND portal in May 2024. The data reveals a stark contrast between the northern and southern regions, with the latter showing notably lower participation:
North West: 189,191 applications
North East: 156,830 applications
North Central: 92,591 applications
TOTAL for Northern Students: 438,612 applications
South West: 122,335 applications
South South: 48,898 applications
South East: 34,047 applications
TOTAL for Southern Students: 205,280 applications
Amb. Nwachukwu expressed disappointment at the low application rates from Southern Nigerian students and urged them to seize the opportunity provided by NELFUND.
“The Nigerian Education Loan Fund is a vital initiative designed to alleviate the financial burden on students and promote equal access to education
“We must ensure that all regions of the Country benefit from this scheme. I encourage students from the southern regions to take advantage of this opportunity and apply for the loan”, he added
He reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving the welfare of students and called on educational institutions, student bodies and other stakeholders to sensitize students about the NELFUND and encourage them to apply. He assured that the process is simple, and support is available for those who need assistance.

The NELFUND is a Federal government initiative aimed at providing interest-free loans to Nigerian students to cover tuition fees and other educational expenses.
