Awak Sabit Bior Kuier, a 23-year-old South Sudanese who is a Finnish professional basketball player

Awak Sabit Bior Kuier, a 23-year-old South Sudanese maintained an active engagement with Reyer Venezia in the Italian Lega Basket Femminile and the Euro League Women, as well as with the Dallas Wings of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).

This female professional athlete competes internationally as a member of the national team. The Wings selected her with the second overall pick in the 2021 WNBA draft, making her the second Finnish player to be drafted into the league following Taru Tuukkanen, and in May 2021, she made history as the first Finnish player to compete in the WNBA.

She was born in Cairo, Egypt, and is of South Sudanese descent. At the age of two, she relocated to Finland as a refugee with her family and initially settled in the city of Kotka.

Our reporter states that her family has relocated to the coastal town of Uusikaupunki and she possesses dual Finnish and Egyptian citizenship.

Kuier speaks Italian, Arabic, Finnish, and English fluently. She has four older brothers and her parents are members of the Jehovah’s Witnesses organization.
