Ex-Chairman of councilorship Forum for Bassa LG, Francis Jere describes LG Autonomy as a right step

The autonomy of Local Government has been described as a right step in right direction towards deepening democracy in Nigeria.

A former Chairman of Councillorship Forum for Bassa Local Government Area, Mr Francis Jere stated this while reacting to the supreme court verdict on the issues.

Mr Francis said, Local Government constitutionally is to bring government closer to the people at the grassroots level hence the need for the respect of the choice of people without undue interference from the state government.

He maintained that with the development, people of reputable character will be attracted to level and those who emerged during election will be loyal and responsive to the people as well.

His words ” it is long overdue of course, we practice federalism, and that should be respected absolutely. Both Chairmen and Councillors’ position should be contested for in real democracy and federalism. Joint account system of state and local Government has been abused by some Governors leading to slow pace of development at the local level. The supreme court has just done her responsibility by bringing to fore the constitutional rights of the council and hopefully it will positively change a lot in terms of human capital development”.

The politicians cum business man emphasised that Nigeria will be better when right things are strictly adhere to.
