….Prof. Halima tasked stakeholders to proactively tackle menace
A University don has emphasized the crucial role stakeholders play in combating gender-based violence against women in society.
Associate Professor Halima Doma, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, highlighted the significance during the Female Law Students’ Forum, Nsuk chapter’s ‘Empowering Women in Law’ program.
Nasarawa State University’s Female Law Students’ Forum has convened an event dedicated to eradicating sexual and gender-based violence through advocacy campaigns and policy reform strategies.
In her address on the role of stakeholders, Associate Professor Halima Doma, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, denounced sexual-based violence against women as a rampant global pandemic that grossly infringes upon victims’ dignity, safety, and fundamental human rights.
The Associate professor highlighted Nigeria’s existing laws that prohibit gender-based violence and protects everyone’s rights and dignity urged the government and stakeholders to raise awareness about the issue and ensure women’s rights are protected.
She encouraged women, particularly girls, to report incidents of gender-based violence, to enable lawyers follow up on such cases.
Former Nasarawa State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Abdulkarim Kana, commended the female law students for their initiative noting that as an advocate of gender-based violence he formulated laws to address related GBV cases when he served as commissioner of justice in the state.
President of the Female Law Students’ Forum Nsuk Kadri Shukrah Mayowa underscored their responsibilities in sensitizing the public, especially vulnerable women, to speak out against violence.
Some students interviewed said the campaign would not doubt empower women to speak out against discrimination and violence.
