‘Jesus Christ is not God’ sparks reactions on social media
Arguments against Jesus Christ being God often cite His death on the cross, asserting that God cannot die, thus implying that Jesus, who died, is not divine. Additionally, some interpretations emphasize that Jesus is the Son of God but not “God the Son,” arguing that the concept of the Trinity evolved historically and was not part of early Christian doctrine.
These perspectives highlight a distinction between Jesus’ role and God’s nature, suggesting a monotheistic view where only the Father is the true God.
Reacting on the trending topic, the online community of internet users across social media platforms have commenced reacting to a banner about Jesus Christ displayed at the entrance of the Lekki Central Mosque in Lagos State, South West region of Nigeria
The banner’s inscription, which circulated widely on Wednesday, read: “Jesus Christ is not God. He is a Prophet and Messenger of God!”
The banner also quoted the Glorious Quran 5:72, stating, “ALLAH says, Those who say that God is the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, have disbelieved. The Messiah had said, ‘Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord. God has forbidden Paradise to anyone who worships something else besides Him.'”
Reactions have followed the message, with some arguing that the motive behind it was blasphemous.
On the other hand, some have insisted that pastors have repeatedly validated the message.
Wumi Tuase, a Nigerian actress, shared her disappointment on X, noting, “I generally refrain from engaging in religious conversations, but I was taken aback by the presence of this display at the gate of Lekki Central Mosque.”

In the last twenty years, my family church has been targeted by Muslim extremists, who have set it on fire for unwarranted reasons, such as religious extremism and President Buhari’s defeat in the 2011 election.
“This is the grim reality for hundreds of churches and individuals falsely accused of blasphemy. We would not be having this conversation if this article were written by a Christian organisation. Tolerance is essential for progress in a pluralistic society like ours.”
