Nasarawa Assembly pushes for equal sharing of state resources and opportunities

The Nasarawa State House of Assembly has passed into a second reading a Bill for a Law to Establish the Nasarawa State Character Commission and for Other Matters Connected Thereto.
Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, Speaker of the House, announced the bill’s passage into second reading during House proceedings in Lafia today, after Hon. Hudu A Hudu, the sponsor, presented its substance.
The Speaker explained that the bill is intended to promote fairness and equity in the distribution of State resources, offering several benefits to LGAs.
Speaker Jatau referred the bill to the House Committee on Public Accounts for review and reporting back to the House by 30th April, 2025.
Earlier, Hon. Hudu A Hudu, the Sponsor of the bill, presented its substance, stating that the bill aims to ensure fairness and equity in political positions, appointments, employments, and economic resources, among others, in the State.
He said that the bill would also enable every local government in the State to have it equal share in the allocation of resources.
” It will also give our people a sense of belonging and the commission is to formulate guidelines for government agencies, fair distribution of resources, appointments, employments among others across LGAs” he said.
Also contributing, Hon. Jacob Ajegana Kudu, Hon. Jonah Ali Dizaho and Hon Mohammed Adamu Omadefu, all supported the bill to scale second reading.
They said that the bill apart from ensuring fairness and equity in distribution of resources would also promote unity and peace in the State.
Also, the House has passed into third reading A Bill for a Law to Amend Nasarawa State Water Supply and Sanitation Law, 2023 and for other Matters Connected Thereto.
Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau, the Speaker of the House announced the passage of the bill during the House Proceedings today in Lafia.
The Speaker of the House directed the Clerk of the House to produce a clean copy of the bill for Gov. Sule’s assent.
Earlier, Rt. Hon. Abel Yakubu Bala, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House moved a motion for the bill to scale third reading.
Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana, the Deputy Minority Leader seconded the motion.
The House unanimously passed the bill into law
Similarly, the House during the day sitting received the report of the Standing Committee on Housing and Environment on A Bill for a Law to Provide for the Regulation and Control of Issuance of Land Consent and Community Agreements to Mining Entities by Mining Communities and Other Matters Related Thereto
The Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Mohammed Adamu Omadefu while presenting the committee’s report said that the bill apart from boosting the revenue base of the State Government would also promote unity and peace in the State.
He said that the bill would also tackle illegal mining and other emerging challenges associated with mining in the State.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau fixed 28th April, 2025 for the deliberation of the committee’s report.
The House has equally deliberated and adopted the report of the Joint Committee on Education, Science and Technology/Health/ Women Affairs on a Bill for a Law to Provide for Menstrual Hygiene Products for Girls in Nasarawa State Public Schools by Nasarawa State Government and other Related Matters There with.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau fixed 15th April, 2024 for the third reading of the bill.
Earlier, Hon. Abel Yakubu Bala, the Deputy Majority Leader moved a motion for the adoption of the committee’s report which was seconded by the Deputy Minority Leader of the House Hon. Onarigu Onah Kana.
The House unanimously adopted the committee’s report.
Furthermore, the House has passed into first reading A Bill for a Law to Regulate the Engagement of Casual Workers in Nasarawa State Public Service and For Purposes Connected Therewith.
The Bill is being sponsored by Rt. Hon. Abel Yakubu Bala, the Deputy Majority Leader of the House and member representing Nasarawa Eggon West constituency.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau slated 28th April, 2025 for the second reading of the bill.
The House also passed into first reading A Bill for a Law to Provide for Magistrates, Sharia Court Sole Judges and Customary Court Sole Judges, Increase of Retirement Age Service Law, 2025 and other Matters Connected Thereto.
The Bill is being sponsored by Hon. Barr. Esson Mairiga Ambina the Chairman, House Committee on Judiciary and member Representing Lafia North Constituency.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau fixed 28th April, 2025 for the second reading of the bill.
Furthermore, the House passed into first reading A Bill for a Law to Regulate the Activities of Farmers and Herdsmen and to Control the Movement of Livestock within Nasarawa State and for the Prevention of Conflict and Other Matters Connected Thereto.
The bill is being sponsored by Hon. Dr. Ibrahim Peter Akwe, the Chairman, House Committee on Agriculture and member representing ObI One constituency.
The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Danladi Jatau slated 29th April, 2025 for the second reading of the bill.
The House however proceeds on Ramadan recess to resume on 14th April, 2025.
