NDSF: Delta Concludes Local Government Trials
The Delta State Sports Commission has set its sight on picking only the best athletes from the state for the maiden edition of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, bankrolled Niger Delta Sports Festival scheduled to hold in Uyo the Akwa Ibom state capital next month.
The Executive Chairman of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr Onoriode Oborevwori disclosed this in Asaba after the conclusion of the Local Government Trials for the NDSF.
Mr Oborevwori who had visited all three venues earmarked for the Local Government Trials said the State Sports Commission would organize a state wide trials next week to pick the best athletes from the Local Government Trials.
According to the State Sports Commission Chairman, the bulk of athletes who made it through from the various Local government areas would be pitted against each other with the best getting automatic slot for the Niger Delta Sports fiesta.
Mr Oborevwori who commended the athletes who had qualified from the Local government trials urged them to see their success at the Local Government level as an opportunity to take their talents to the national and international scene hence they must not relent but improve on their performances to qualify to represent Delta State at the maiden edition of the Niger Delta Sports fiesta.
He enjoined those who did not make it from the Local Government trials not to relent but redouble their efforts as the State would be defending its National Sports Festival title in Abeokuta in May and they could become part of the State’s contingent if they emerged at the National Sports Festival trials that would likely hold next month.
Speaking in the same vein, the Director-General of the Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Festus Ohwojero, described the Local trials as apt and a success which threw up new talents while challenging those athletes that advanced from the local government trials to build on their performances at the trials.
Mr Ohwojero averred that the State trails would be a tougher platform as they would face off against the best from other local government areas across the state.
The trials which culminated yesterday, featured weightlifting, chess, swimming, football, canoeing among other sports.
Team Delta would be going to the Niger Delta Sports Festival as favorites as the state is the defending champion of the National Sports Festival.
