Ugandan authorities have detained two men for purportedly insulting President Yoweri Museveni, First Lady Janet Museveni, and General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the president’s son, in TikTok posts.
David Ssengozi, aka Lucky Choice (21), and Isaiah Ssekagiri (28), were ordered by Magistrate Stella Maris Amabilis to be held at Kigo Prison until November 13, pending their initial court hearing.
The two men and Julius Tayebwa, 19, are accused of hate speech and disseminating malicious information concerning the president’s family and musicians associated with the National Resistance Movement.
According to prosecutors, the content shared on TikTok was designed to mock, denigrate, and degrade the first family and other NRM affiliates, promoting hostility.
Although Ssengozi and Ssekagiri denied the charges, their detention follows a recent government crackdown on criticism of state officials.
In September, a police spokesperson warned the public against making derogatory remarks about the president, deeming such actions a criminal offense, following a July incident where a 24-year-old received a six-year prison sentence for posting a critical TikTok video regarding the president and his family.
