Tunisian opposition leader attacked with acid at home

Former Tunisian health minister Abdellatif Mekki, who heads the opposition Action and Achievement party, was gravely injured in an acid assault perpetrated by a neighbour at his home.

“We strongly condemn this criminal attack, which flagrantly violates all humanitarian laws and values. We appeal to security and judicial authorities to take responsibility, investigate these repeated attacks thoroughly, and implement measures to ensure citizen protection.,” the party said.

Mekki tried to run in the presidential elections this October, but the electoral commission rejected his candidacy. Despite the Tunisian administrative court upholding his appeal, Mekki was never included in the list of candidates for the vote.
