Comrade Alhaji Abubakar Isah Ada Abu, the immediate past National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), for Kogi/Koton-Karfe local government area, has defended Engineer Muhammed Abubakar Bashir Gegu, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, against allegations by impeached former Kogi National Youth Council (NYCN) chairman Usman Ogohi, who accused Bashir Gegu of using thugs to remove him from office.

Usman Ogohi, in his recent interview with CrestHill TV YouTube Channel and hosted by Deborah Agbonika, alleged that Engineer Muhammed Abubakar Bashir Gegu singlehandedly removed and chased him out of Kogi State using thugs. However, this claim has been strongly denied by Bashir Gegu and his supporters, who described Ogohi’s allegations as false and self seeking attention to rise after being faded off.

The controversy surrounding Ogohi’s removal involves accusations of financial misconduct and maladministration during his tenure as Kogi NYCN chairman, which led to his suspension and impeachment by youth coordinators and stakeholders.

Ogohi also stated in the interview that he was told by some persons that former Commissioner for Youth, Musa Oando was behind efforts to remove him, the Commissioner denied involvement when contacted directly.

Ogohi also questioned the presence of the Commissioner Bashir Gegu at the Youth House after his removal, if he has no hand in his removal.

Engineer Muhammed Abubakar Bashir Gegu, not being a member of the Kogi NYCN, could not have removed Usman Ogohi singlehandedly or outside the Youth Council constitution. The suspension and impeachment of Ogohi were carried out by the NYCN Kogi State chapter’s executive committee and stakeholders through established council procedures, citing allegations of financial misconduct, maladministration, and violation of the council’s constitution, such as failure to hold executive meetings for over 15 months.

The council’s constitution grants the executive committee the authority to suspend or remove members for gross misconduct, and these actions are typically decided in formal management meetings, not by any individual outside the council’s governance structure.

Therefore, Ogohi’s claim that Bashir Gegu personally orchestrated his removal using thugs lacks constitutional basis and contradicts the formal processes documented by the NYCN Kogi State chapter. The removal was a collective decision by the council’s executives in line with their constitutional mandate.

Ada Abu, who is currently the Local Government Assistant (LA) to Kogi State Governor representing Kogi/Koton-Karfe Local Government Area, stated that Ogohi’s claims are untrue and recalled that Ogohi was imposed on the youth council against the majority wishes of Kogi youths, following a directive from Bashir Gegu during the last NYCN elections.

Despite initial resistance from youth coordinators who preferred Comrade Benjamin Jeremiah Ojodale, Bashir Gegu insisted Ogohi be elected, even providing security and logistics for the election.

Ada Abu criticized Ogohi’s tenure as divisive and marked by financial misconduct, which eventually led to his impeachment while he was in Mecca, Saudi Arabia on pilgrimage.

He said the council is now more peaceful and united without Ogohi, who he described as untrustworthy and disrespectful to leaders who supported him, including Bashir Gegu.

Ada Abu insisted that Ogohi’s leadership was suspended due to allegations of misappropriation and maladministration, though there have been negative reports about his official status, with the NYCN state body at one point declaring him persona non grata

Ada Abu emphasized that Bashir Gegu has been supportive of youth activities in Kogi State, and dismissed Ogohi’s recent interview as a vain attempt to regain attention after his shameful removal.

Ada Abu statement highlights strong condemnation of Usman Ogohi’s recent actions and remarks. It accuses Ogohi of showing “no single shame” by insulting prominent figures such as Engineer Muhammed Abubakar Bashir Gegu, Barrister Ozigi Deedat, and the immediate past Commissioner for Youth & Sport, Alhaji Musa Oando—individuals who have supported him to rise to leadership in the past.
