Kogi tightens noose on IGR, allows only KGIRS to collect all taxes, revenue.

Kogi state Government has approved the harmonization of all sources of revenue to be collected only by State Internally Generated Revenue Service, IGR.

Rising from the meeting of relevant stakeholders of the mining industry in the State, held on Tuesday at the Government House, Lokoja, mining companies operating in the State have been given a 7 day grace to offset their tax liabilities or face sanctions.

The stakeholders meeting which was presided over by the Director State Security Services (DSS) , Kogi State command, had in attendance, the Commissioner of Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engr Muhammed Abubakar Bashir Gegu, Commissioner for Environment, Mr Joseph Oluwasegun, Chairman, Kogi State Internal Revenue Services KGIRS, Alh Salihu Enehe, and representative’s of mining Companies operating in the State.

Speaking to newsmen ,after the meeting , the State Commissioner for Solid Minerals and Natural Resources, Engineer Abubakar Bashir Gegu, confirmed that government has directed that Haulage fees and other Solid Minerals related taxes should be collected by the Kogi State Internal Revenue Services. (KGIRS)

“Any Company that failed to pay the haulage and other taxes to KGIRS risk doing business in the State and if found to have paid to any individual or organisation aside KGIR will lead to prosecution at the appropriate court ,”the Commissioner warned.

The directive also centred on the harmonization of all revenue and all forms of taxes accrued to Ministries, Departments and Government Agencies, Private companies or individuals are to pay to KGIRS.

The Commissioner added that “KGIRS may choose to source out the collections of taxes to consultants, but however added that citizens must confirm with the KGIRS, the authenticity and legality of the operation of any consultancy firm, that claims to be authorized by KGIRS before engaging them in any financial dealings”.

The Security Agencies at the meeting, made up of the DSS, authorized Police, assured of an enabling environment for Miners to operate, but advised them to obey the laws regulating their activities in the State.

They equally called on them to be prompt in the payment of royalties to Federal Government and the State Government in terms of revenue.
